Strength as Stewardship: Why Christian Women Should Train Their Bodies

For many Christian women, fitness can feel complicated.

We’re told to avoid vanity. To focus on the heart. To prioritize spiritual growth over physical pursuits.

And while those things matter deeply, somewhere along the way many women began to believe that taking care of their bodies wasn’t important to God.

But Scripture tells a different story.

Your body is not separate from your faith. It is part of your stewardship.

Your Body Is a Gift, Not an Afterthought

The Bible speaks clearly about how believers should view their bodies.

In 1 Corinthians 6:19–20, Paul writes:

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you…? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”

In context, Paul was addressing how Christians live out their faith in everyday life. His message wasn’t about shame - it was about honor.

If our bodies house the Spirit of God, caring for them becomes an act of reverence.

Exercise isn’t about perfection. It’s about stewardship.

Strength Is Not Vanity

Our culture often equates fitness with appearance. But biblical strength looks very different.

In Proverbs 31:17, the virtuous woman is described like this:

“She dresses herself with strength and makes her arms strong.”

The Proverbs 31 woman wasn’t passive or fragile. She worked, managed a household, cared for others, and handled responsibilities with endurance.

Strength enabled her to fulfill her calling.

The same principle applies today.

Being physically strong allows you to:

  • Serve others with energy

  • stay resilient through hardship

  • steward your health long-term

  • show up consistently in your life and relationships

Strength is not vanity - it is capacity.

Discipline in the Body Shapes the Spirit

Physical training also teaches something deeper: discipline.

Paul draws a powerful comparison between spiritual growth and athletic training in 1 Corinthians 9:25:

“Every athlete exercises self-control in all things.”

Athletes train consistently, even when it’s hard, because they understand that results come from discipline, not motivation.

The same principle applies to faith.

When you train your body, you practice:

  • consistency

  • perseverance

  • patience

  • self-control

These are spiritual qualities as much as physical ones.

Movement Can Become a Form of Prayer

For many people, prayer happens in stillness.

But for others, movement creates the space where they connect most deeply with God.

Walking. Strength training. Being outside.

Movement slows the mind and quiets distractions.

It becomes an opportunity to:

  • pray

  • reflect on Scripture

  • process emotions

  • practice gratitude

When approached intentionally, exercise can become a form of worship.

The Disciplined Woman Trains With Purpose

The disciplined woman doesn’t pursue fitness for approval.

She trains because she understands her body was designed with intention.

She moves because it helps her stay strong for the life God has given her. She practices discipline because consistency shapes character. She cares for her health because stewardship honors the Creator.

Strength becomes a reflection of faith.

Creating Space for Strength and Stillness

Healthy discipline requires both movement and rest.

Strength without reflection becomes striving. Stillness without movement becomes stagnation.

Both are necessary for a balanced life.

This is exactly why I created Strength & Stillness - a devotional and movement guide designed to help women grow stronger physically while staying rooted spiritually.

It’s not about pushing harder or becoming perfect.

It’s about learning to honor God through both movement and quiet time with Him.

Because true strength is built in both places.

If you want to grow stronger in both body and faith, Strength & Stillness was created to guide that process. It combines simple bodyweight workouts with short devotionals designed to help you build discipline, connect with God, and steward your body well.
